Too many times, our headlines are glowing stories of individuals and groups trashing the values and principles our nation historically established, encouraged and represented. Certain media, cultural and political figures seem to relish and encourage these flames of dangerous change. What has created this abyss of violence and hate?
First, we have surrendered our American Christian origins and we have accepted the false belief that Satan no longer exists. Next, we have quit the necessity and importance of traditional family units. Finally, we have allowed our governments to pretend care for people in need.
Our history reveals a majority of early US leaders and citizens were immigrants from Christian cultures. Their belief in an Almighty God, the Bible, the devil, Ten Commandments, and teachings of Jesus Christ formed a common bound. Despite the wide variety of Christian denominations, early Jewish sects and non-Christian minorities, the value systems of honesty, hard work and religious beliefs were widely accepted. Though never perfect, our culture and society blossomed and progressed for many of it's early decades.
Next, the sanctity and strength of families has been assaulted and defamed to the point where any combination of sexes and living places is allowed and recognized as a marriage or common law union. Consequently, fatherless, motherless and parentless households in many communities has become a sad and predominant feature. Violent crime, failing childhood education, individual accountability, drug dependency and neighborhood mayhem are an epidemic plaguing too many of our beloved cities and towns. Also, our national birth rate is in dangerous decline because "me" has replaced "we". The original Christian idea that families consisted of a male husband and female wife with the primary role of producing children and maintaining a caring circle of relatives seems no longer relevant in many places. Once a hallmark of our culture this aberration represents a dangerous situation of confusion and ongoing social upheaval .
Finally, our government has strayed from it's traditional role of safeguarding it's citizens from hostile domestic and foreign enemies. Though Jesus recognized the need for a Caesar, he never intended for civil authorities to control so many agencies that detract from the more meaningful role better served by families, churches and charitable organizations. In the early decades of the twentieth century, the idea that everyone deserved an equal share of the national wealth gave rise to harmful isms which rob people of incentive and hope while promising "a fair deal" for everyone. Nonsense! The chasm between the rich and poor is cruelly used by political and social leaders with agendas that are unethical and dishonest. As Ronald Reagan famously observed and warned, "hello I'm from the government and I'm here to help". Indeed, we all know the waste, fraud, red tape, and lethargy of government help and it can never replace the Christian values of family, ethical behavior, immediacy, and self reliance. The jabbering ever promising politicians and cultural leaders are simply self serving charlatans.
If our market based republic is to survive and thrive, we must recognize it's current failings. Then, we must peacefully and intelligently battle the uncivility and ignorance polluting our midst. Our counter offensive must include common sense, honest dialogue about the value of our Christian/Judeo and family value systems. Also, we must present a reasoned objection to government's intent and ongoing habit of foolishly using our national treasury to forever insure dependency of individuals and families by way of government handouts.
We must march forward without violence or hate for those who cling to different beliefs. However, our struggle must be serious and sustained. We must renew the core values responsible for our great union of states! Is it "Onward Christian Soldiers" song time?
